Review : This was, for me anyway, the usual Saturday afternoon flick with my partner and son to pass an hour or two. To be honest could have been any movie.The movie started sedately enough but gathered pace and complexity with every minute ,throughout the audience was laughing out loud , adults and children alike (including me). It had everything for kids and adults, some rude jokes, great references to adult movies. A multi-layered villain, heroes and comedic characters.The animation was stunning but i stopped looking at the animation and got hooked on the story and characters, maybe thats the way it should be.Definitely worth a hour or so of anybodys time.

Review : I had never heard the term set-up movie before today. There has definitely been a trend of splitting up a story into multiple movies. These movies dont have a beginning-middle-end the same way other movies do but at the very least theres some progress. The problem with the Mockingjay Pt 1 is not that its boring or poorly made. In fact, there is a lot of excitement in this movie. The problem is that from beginning to end there is hardly anything that changes. If you look at where the characters are in the beginning and where they are in the end there isnt much thats changed except for what happens in the very end. Katniss has been doing things but we havent seen much of the effects of her actions.I didnt dislike this movie that much despite its slow beginning. I just cant give this my seal of approval when I left the theater feeling like I saw half a movie. By the time the story gets its payoff my memory of this movie will be worn-off.

Review : The Boy Next Door is the latest film that January of 2015 has to offer and man oh man does this film scream January. It doesnt just scream January, it screams out multiple other adjectives to describe this useless, idiotic, and ridiculous film. The Boy Next Door pits a recent divorceè in a torrid affair with the next door neighbor who happens to be crazy and you could probably tell how this film is going to go due to its overtly lets not even try anymore attitude. Lets start off with the good...there is none. Now for the bad, theres a ton. Number one, I think that anyone with half a brain could probably realize that this is a horrible film. It is paced terribly, it has the dialog of a cheesy Lifetime movie from the nineties and it has Jennifer Lopez in her worst role to date. The films 90 or so minute runtime even feels too long as we wallow in classic stalker movie clichés for its duration. It runs through the classic genre thrills from Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle and many more and uses absolutely nothing with it. The biggest issue with this film isnt the terrible plot, it isnt the half baked thrills, it is the dialog. The dialog in this film sounds like the first draft of an episode of Guiding Light. Theres no flavor to it, thus letting the actors turn in bland and listless performances. For a film that is listed as a suspense thriller, there is no suspense and zero thrills. Quite honestly, the only thing that was thrilling in this film were the end credits. Yes, this film is that bad and it stands up pretty high on the list of terrible films Ive seen. It fits nice and snug between Troll 2 and Gigli.

Review : It has often been said that Wes Anderson walks the fine line between folly and genius. In the Grand Budapest Hotel, however, this distinction no longer exists: the ridiculous becomes brilliant, and brilliant has never been this ridiculous. It is his best work, or at least the film which has all of Andersons creative impulses working in one direction, producing a coherent work of art. His films have always been quirky, charming and out-of-this world, but never before has the audience been immersed in Andersonland as fully as with this film. The colours, the camera movement that switches between different parts of the set, the music, the lens angle distortion, the ridiculously stellar cast, all of Andersons trademark elements, combine to produce the ultimate Anderson film. The absolutely ridiculous CGI is used perfectly to add to the surrealism of the movie. It is also extremely well crafted, not only visually, but structurally. Unlike some of his previous work, the editing, the pacing and the rhythm of Budapest are pitch-perfect.Is it a great film? Im not sure. It does not attempt to cope with the issues of death, love, despair, the big ones. On the other hand, it seeps with nostalgia, a bittersweet longing for an age long past, and the fascinating characters it produced. It is technically a detective comedy, and one has to note that the genre seems to suit Andersons peculiar brand of filmmaking very well. But never before has Hitchcocks Macguffin been as explicitly embodied as by the Boy With the Apple. The plot is merely a mechanism that allows Anderson to transport his vision onto the screen, a vision of a peculiar world seemingly different from our own, but filled with just as much loss and, at the same time, human compassion as ours. There is comedy, but its either very subtle or incredibly over the top, and most viewers are uncomfortable with both. There isnt a single ordinary shot, pretty much every image is out of place to such an extent that they begin to form one coherent film, and a fantastic one at that.
